Bloomfield Hills, Michigan is the fourth wealthiest city in America, containing more than 1,000 households. During the Census 2000, residents reported an average per capita income of $104,921, compared to the national average of $21,587. The only other cities with such wealth are in California and Florida. The Midwestern city of Bloomfield Hills lies in the southeastern corner of Michigan, in Oakland County. For counties with more than one million residents, Oakland County ranks second nationally in per capita income. The county’s thriving businesses employed more than 800,000 people according to Census 2000, over 13% of Michigan’s residents.

Bloomfield Hills incorporated as a village in 1927 and became a city in 1932. Residential building began here in the 1890’s, and many rambling estates still exist from that time. The 2000 Census recorded a population of 3,940. Located fourteen miles from the bustling city of Detroit, Bloomfield Hills is the home to many of the chief executives of the thriving auto industry that "Motown" is famous for, as well as a number of highly successful entrepreneurs.

Geographically, Bloomfield Hills extends five square miles. The Detroit Free Press coined a phrase in 1993, describing Bloomfield Hills as “five square miles of money”. Median home prices for single-family dwellings were $875,800 according to the 2000 data. Estimates for 2004 showed prices of $1,400,000. While the number of renters in Bloomfield Hills is significantly lower than other places in Michigan, the rental costs averaged $1,400 per month. Monthly mortgages were more than $3,600, (all 2000 data).

Bloomfield Hills residents place a high priority on their children’s education. The public school system consistently receives excellent rankings. The International Academy, a public, tuition-free high school, holds the second highest ranking in the nation for outstanding quality of education. Sixty-seven percent of Bloomfield Hills residents hold a bachelor's degree or more advanced college degree. Two fine colleges are in the city itself, Cranbrook Academy of Art and the Oakland Community College. Within a 20 mile radius, 22 other colleges and universities await Bloomfield Hills students.

Bloomfield Hills is part of the larger Bloomfield Township, which extends over 25 square miles of scenic rolling hills, private lakes and elegant homes. The first township established within Oakland County and one of the oldest in all of Michigan, Bloomfield Township remains a primarily residential area of 44,000 residents, with winding roads, large estates and tranquil streams. With an extremely low crime rate and outstanding quality of living, Bloomfield Township remains an enviable place to call home.

Bloomfield Hills residents enjoy mild summers, with temperatures staying in the comfortable low eighties. Winters can be rugged, with more than 10 inches of snowfall during each winter month. Year-round, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan residents enjoy a strong and secure economy and a prosperous way of life.
