Farmington Hills, Michigan

Farmington Hills, Michigan, known as the “Fraternal Twin” of the City of Farmington, lies at the crossroads of Interstates 275 and 696. This upscale southeastern MI community covers 33 square miles (36 miles including Farmington), and ranks as the largest city within Oakland County. At the time of the 2000 Census, Farmington Hills reported a population of 82,111, while the combined communities have approximately 95,000 residents. While the two cities have distinctly different addresses and services, Farmington Hills and Farmington are often referred to as one community.

Located in the shadows of metropolitan Detroit, the cities of Farmington and Farmington Hills occupy the central core of southeastern Michigan, offering convenient access to all major thoroughfares. Together, these “Fraternal Twins” form a high-energy business atmosphere, vital to the region's progressive economy. These communities are home to such renowned corporate companies as ACN Inc., Alcoa, Robert Bosch Corporation, Dana Corporation, The Gale Group, Harman/Becker Automotive Systems, Nextel, and Nissan Technical Center North America Headquarters.

Several branches of large corporations also operate their businesses from the local office campuses. In addition, the local municipalities offer a wealth of resources and services to the corporate community in order to foster growth and development for businesses of all sizes.

Farmington and Farmington Hills also share a top-notch public education system, which covers the majority of the city’s facilities. A portion of the schools remain part of the Clarenceville School District, Walled Lake Consolidated School District, and West Bloomfield School District. Farmington Hills residents also have a nice selection of private schools, including two parochial Catholic facilities. Those seeking higher education in the area have access to Michigan School of Professional Psychology, the Orchard Ridge Campus of Oakland Community College, and the Oakland Center of Wayne State University.

Farmington Hills and Farmington have a rich cultural history, reflected in the charming downtown districts and myriad historic sites and buildings. These include the Longacre House, the Masonic Temple, and the Governor Warner Mansion. Farmington, listed among Oakland County’s 30 traditional downtown districts, offers an enviable alternative to bustling shopping malls. The recently renovated downtown area includes picturesque streets lined with art galleries, quaint boutiques, numerous cafés and restaurants, a vintage cinema, and Heritage Park, the largest public park in Oakland County. The Downtown Development Authority (DDA) received a grant from the Main Street program in 2003 to revitalize the downtown area.

Each community sponsors special community events throughout the year. These include the Summer Fun Series, Summer Concert Series, the Halloween Fun Fest, and the "Shopping for Holiday Dollars" promotion. There is also a community Farmer’s Market, which, along with the other community celebrations, attracts visitors and residents alike.
