West Bloomfield, Michigan features a serene and scenic panorama with luxurious homes resting against a backdrop of gently rolling hills. Located within a glacial moraine, West Bloomfield formed from the western portion of Bloomfield Township in 1833. West Bloomfield occupies the south central portion of Oakland County, just 10 miles northwest of Detroit’s city limits.

This vibrant suburban community comprises more than 31 square miles, encompassing the City of Orchard Lake Village, the City of Keego Harbor, and the City of Sylvan within its borders. At the time of the 2000 Census, West Bloomfield contained a population of 64,860 residents.

Located in southeastern MI, West Bloomfield enjoys the benefits of close proximity and membership with the prestigious Automation Alley. The emerging business communities of Oakland County include such promising sectors as advanced electronics and controls, alternative energy and power generation, biotechnology, and homeland security. Residents of West Bloomfield generally earn a median household income of $91,661, well above the national average of $41,994. Oakland County ranks among the wealthiest counties in America.

The Greater West Bloomfield Historical Society highlights sites such as the Keego Theater, the Michigan Military Academy, and Orchard Lake Museum. Detroit teems with art galleries, museums, live music venues such as the renowned DTE Energy Music Theatre, and is home to such popular destinations as the Detroit Zoo and Eastern Market. Other nearby attractions include the Hidden Lake Gardens, Potter Park Zoo, and the W.J. Beal Botanical Garden.

Multitudes of small and medium lakes shape the landscape of West Bloomfield, giving it the nickname “the Lake Township of Oakland County.” Cass Lake (the county’s largest) and Pine Lake are both within the borders of West Bloomfield. Orchard Lake, named for the plentiful apple orchards of the 1800s, lies surrounded by the City of Orchard Lake Village, just to the west of Pine Lake.

This picturesque community of lakes also boasts more than 516 acres of parkland maintained and operated by the Parks and Recreation Commission. Local parks include Bloomer Park, Civic Center Park, Drake Community Sports Park, and Karner Farm, the home of the Community Garden. Civic Center Park also provides winter recreation areas ideal for cross-country skiing, ice-skating, and sledding.

West Bloomfield School District, the primary district serving the community, ranks among the nation’s top public school districts. West Bloomfield includes several primary schools and only two high schools: Jewish Academy of Metropolitan Detroit and West Bloomfield High School. Higher education facilities in the area include the Highland Lakes and Orchard Ridge campuses of Oakland Community College, Oakland University, Madonna University, Michigan Jewish Institute, and SS. Cyril & Methodius Seminary. Post-secondary campuses in Detroit include Marygrove College, University of Detroit Mercy and Wayne State University.
